Short Term Goals To Achieve Long Term Weight Results

I have successfully lost over 75 pounds in a 13-month period, which is the first time I’ve been able to consistently stick to a weight-loss plan. One thing that kept me on track was actually setting up short-term goals… lots of them. In the end, they added up to achieving my long-term weight loss goals. Buy a monthly/weekly planner

Your first step is to buy a monthly planner that can keep your goals organized and make them easily accessible. Personally, I use a dry-erase board and hang it in my bedroom. If that doesn’t work, you can download an app like PlannerPro and keep tabs on your iPad, or EgoTimer if you are an Android phone user. Or go old-school and buy an actual planner that you can write in. Whichever method works, get something that is easy to keep up with.

Go one day at a time

Take a look at your planner. It’s likely organized into a weekly or monthly view. Use whichever is best for you, but I typically go weekly. Here is where the fun starts, as you’ll begin setting up daily goals. These are small, easily obtainable and consistent goals that can be incorporated into your daily routine. I setup 3-4 goals per day, depending on my schedule.
So here are a few examples of what you can accomplish within one day:

Gym workout

Eat healthy lunch

Don’t buy fast food

Run 1/2 mile

Wake up early

Get to work 10 minutes early

Cook paleo meal

The list goes on and on. But the point is that each of those goals contribute to a productive and healthy day. For example, on Monday I can 1) Wake up @ 5:30am  2) Run 1/2 mile  3) Cook a paleo lunch  4) Don’t buy fast food. If I do all of those things, then I’ll get a red marker and put a big check on that day. Also be sure to mark off the other goals as you finish them. You feel a real sense of accomplishment after completing a few days in a row and start incorporating these simple activities into your everyday life.

Your goals will evolve over time, so keep yourself flexible. As you implement them into your daily life, you’ll figure out which ones mix together well and which ones are harder to achieve. Just be sure to set goals that are heplful but also realistic. If you setup things that you aren’t likely to accomplish, then you’ll get frustrated and quit. That’s not the point. Small changes can add up to something big in the long run, so keep that in mind.

Record your weight

If you’re attempting to lose weight, then record it each morning. Keep an accurate scale in your home and weigh yourself every morning when you wake up, before eating or drinking anything. This should give you the most accurate reading of your true weight. Record that weight on your calendar. It’s really simple, but you’ll get motivated when you see the weight drop one pound here and there over a 1-2 week period.

I write down my weight on the full month view of my calendar, so it’s easy to look over a 30-day period and see my weight loss trend. Once your metabolism kicks in and you start shredding the pounds, you’ll want to continue seeing positive results. At the same time, keep yourself honest and record your weight even if you’ve gained a few pounds. You may not want to see it, but writing down a 3-4 pound gain will really motivate you to kick butt and make it up. You’ve got to own up and face the reality of your weight situation; only then can you make true progress and drop the pounds.

Setup your schedule one week at a time & reward yourself!

Once you start committing yourself to being healthy long-term, you’ll likely notice that you are more organized and more active with your day-to-day schedule. It can be a lot to keep up with and will often change from week to week, which is why I recommend only setting up your health plan one week at a time. This keeps you focused on the short-term goals ahead of you, while keeping you flexible for the changes that life presents to all of us.

Don’t make everything so rigid and set in stone, as your health routine will fail if it continuously interferes with other aspects of your life. Find that happy balance to where you can maintain your desired lifestyle, while incorporating fitness activities that are easy to maintain for the long-term.

melon rewardAlso be sure to reward yourself! Usually I will setup something fun on the weekend to do if I had a really great week. That can be food-related, a family day out or just some personal time to relax. Regardless, be sure to keep yourself happy by rewarding yourself for what you’ve accomplished! Just don’t go too overboard and ruin the progress that you’ve made.

Short-term goals add up to long-term results

All of these short-term goals really add up as weeks turn into months and months turn into years. I’ve stuck to this sort of organizational plan for 13 months and in that time I’ve lost nearly 75 pounds. Having a great 1-2 weeks will add up and eventually become the norm, as your lifestyle shifts to fit the new “you”. When looking back at my old weight from months ago, I marvel at what I’ve accomplished and how easy it’s been to stick to it. You should have the same results by incorporating some form of short-term organization and long-term planning into your health routine.
